After a horrible 2007 season the White Sox had their fingers crossed with Contreras that he would turn things around. They have had their prayers answered so far this season. He has started 9 games for the White Sox this year and he is 5-3 with a 3.17 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. If he can keep up the good work he should win a lot of games for the Sox due to the very solid bullpen they have.

The Chicago White Sox place Juan Uribe on the D.L.

The White Sox have placed 2B Juan Uribe on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Uribe has played in 38 games for the White Sox this season and he is 23 for 116 (.198 avg, .590 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 3 homers and 15 RBIs. Uribe will be replaced at 2B by Alexei Ramirez. Ramirez has played in 24 games for the White Sox this season and he is 13 for 64 (.203 avg, .548 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer and 6 RBIs. The White Sox will likely suffer a little bit on defense as Ramirez is not nearly as good as Uribe is, but Ramirez will likely hit at least as well as Uribe has this season. The White Sox have recalled 30-year old lefty swinging OF Dewayne Wise to replace Uribe on the roster. He was 51 for 151 (.338 avg, 1.029 OPS) in AAA ball so far this season with 31 runs scored, 8 homers, 18 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Don’t let those numbers fool you however as Wise has not had much success against major league pitching. Wise has played in 183 games in his major league career and he is 68 for 339 (.201 avg, .598 OPS) with 45 runs scored, 9 homers, 32 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

The Chicago White Sox lose Oneli Perez on waivers to the Indians

Soon to be 26-year old righty reliever Oneli Perez has been lost on waivers to the division rival Cleveland Indians. Perez was off to a very rough start this season in AAA ball. In 14 AAA games this season, Perez was 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA and a 2.18 WHIP. He whiffed 19 batters in only 17 innings but he allowed 28 hits and that just won’t get it done. Perez was the #24 prospect in the entire White Sox system coming into this season according to the Baseball America Prospect Handbook so he could come back to haunt them in the future.

34-year old lefty reliever Ray King has signed a minor league contract with the White Sox. He pitched in 12 games (0 starts) with the Nationals this season before his release and he was 0-0 with 0 saves, a 5.68 ERA and a 2.05 WHIP. King has now pitched in 593 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 20-23 with 2 saves, a 3.46 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. This was a nice low risk/high reward signing for the White Sox as King has been an effective situational lefty over his career.

Aaron Poreda is off to a solid start in the minors for the Chicago White Sox

21-year old lefty starter Aaron Poreda is a big guy at 6′6″, 240 pounds who can bring the heat. Poreda is the #3 prospect in the White Sox’ system according to Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook. He has started 6 games in A-Ball this season and he is 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. If Poreda keeps showing the control he is right now (25 K’s, 5 walks in 36.1 innings) he will likely be on the fast track to Chicago.
