The Chicago White Sox won a 1-game playoff with the Twins to advance to the playoffs and meet up with the Tampa Bay Rays. John Danks was the biggest star of this game for the White Sox as he started the game and worked 8 innings allowing only 2 hits and 0 runs. He improved to 12-9 on the season which is a lot better than he pitched as a rookie the season before. Bobby Jenks finished up with a scoreless 9th inning to pick up his 30th save of the season. DH Jim Thome had the big hit on offense as he clubbed a homer in the 7 inning off of Nick Blackburn and the pitchers of the White Sox made it stand up. But, it was a play by Ken Griffey Jr. and A.J. Pierzynski that gave Thome a chance to be the hero. Griffey caught a ball in center field and he made a good throw to the plate that A.J. Pierzynski caught on one hop and tagged out Michael Cuddyer at the plate to preserve the shutout. The White Sox will now fly to Tampa, Florida to deal with the upstart Tampa Bay Rays.

25-year old righty starting pitcher Gavin Floyd has finally come into his own. You know the Phillies are scratching their heads knowing that they gave up too early on Floyd who they could really use right now. Floyd has started 29 games for the White Sox this season and he is 15-7 with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Floyd has been the White Sox’ best starting pitcher this season and he will be one of the biggest reasons that they make the playoffs….if they do.

The White Sox have designated righty knuckleballer Charlie Haeger for assignment. He pitched in 28 games (25 starts) in AAA this season for the Pale Hose and he was 10-13 with a 4.45 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Haeger pitched in 15 games (1 start) in his major league career and he is 1-2 with 1 save, a 4.85 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. The White Sox likely won’t miss Haeger much as they have a lot of young pitchers that they like better than him.

The White Sox have lost Carlos Quentin for the remainder of the regular season after he fractured his right wrist punching a bat with his right hand. This is a huge blow to the White Sox as Quentin has been the best player on the team this season. Quentin played in 130 games for the White Sox this season and he was 138 for 480 (.288 avg, .965 OPS) with 96 runs scored, 36 homers, 100 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.
