The Chicago White Sox are losing patience with Josh Fields

Josh Fields started the season pretty well but he has been just plain awful as of late. He has played in 41 games for the White Sox so far this season and he is 35 for 153 (.229 avg, .607 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 2 homers and 16 RBIs. Fields has looked helpless at times this season as he has whiffed 48 times already. The bad thing for the White Sox is that every time they try to give Wilson Betemit a chance to take the job away from Fields he displays a iron mitt. They might have to look outside the organization if they choose to replace Fields in the starting lineup.

The White Sox have signed 33-year old lefty swinging 1B/OF Daryle Ward to a minor league contract. Ward played in 89 games for the Cubs last season and he was 22 for 102 (.216 avg, .721 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 4 homers and 17 RBIs. He has now played in 948 games in his major league career and he is 588 for 2,233 (.263 avg, .767 OPS) with 243 runs scored, 90 homers and 380 RBIs. Ward might be able to help the White Sox down the road as he’s a good pinch hitter and those are very hard to find.

The Chicago White Sox designate Jerry Owens for assignment

The White Sox have designated 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jerry Owens for assignment. He has already refused a minor league assignment becoming a free agent. Owens played in 12 games for the White Sox this season and he was 1 for 12 (.083 avg, .350 OPS) with 1 stolen base. Owens played in parts of four seasons for the White Sox in which he was 103 for 393 (.262 avg, .624 OPS) with 49 runs scored, 1 homer, 18 RBIs and 36 stolen bases. Some team will give Owens a chance in the near future. The White Sox have recalled 26-year old righty swinging 2B Jayson Nix to replace Owens on the active roster. Nix has played in 8 games in AA+AAA ball this year and he is 12 for 30 (.400 avg, .933 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

UPDATE: Owens decided to refuse his minor league assignment and he has signed with the Seattle Mariners.

The Chicago White Sox have placed Brian Anderson on the D.L.

The White Sox have placed starting CF Brian Anderson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle. He has played in 18 games for the White Sox this season and he is 15 for 52 (.288 avg, .710 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Anderson’s defense will be missed the most in CF while he is out. The White Sox have recalled 33-year old lefty swinging outfielder Scott Podsednik who will likely replace Anderson until he’s ready to return to action. Podsednik has already played in 2 games for the White Sox and he is 2 for 8 (.250 avg, .500 OPS) with 1 run scored. Podsednik will add speed to the offense which has always been a favorite thing of manager Ozzie Guillen.
