The White Sox have traded 25-year old righty swinging shortstop Javier Castillo to the Mets but no word yet on what they got back. Castillo has played in 50 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 47 for 178 (.264 avg, .722 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 3 homers and 17 RBIs. Castillo was not one of the better prospects in the White Sox’ system so they likely won’t miss him too much.

The White Sox have signed 32-year old righty starting pitcher Freddy Garcia to a minor league deal. Garcia came to spring training with the Mets this season but he didn’t make the final roster. He pitched in 3 games (all starts) with the Tigers last season and he was 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. Garcia has now pitched in 266 games (265 starts) in his major league career and he is 118-77 with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. Garcia hasn’t been the same since undergoing shoulder surgery a couple of years ago but the White Sox don’t have much to lose in giving him a chance to revive his career.

The Chicago White Sox designate Corky Miller for assignment

Blogged under General, Front Page, Bloglockers, Arrivals & Departures by chinmusic on Saturday 6 June 2009 at 6:00 am

The White Sox have designated catcher Corky Miller for assignment. Miller played in 14 games for the White Sox this season and he was 8 for 39 (.205 avg, .544 OPS) with 5 runs scored and 5 RBIs. The White Sox felt that they needed a better backup catcher so that they could give A.J. Pierzynski more days off the rest of the year and that was the main reason Miller was let go.
