The White Sox have re-signed 29-year old righty reliever Brian Bruney to a minor league deal. Bruney pitched in 23 games (0 starts) for the White Sox last year and he was 1-0 with a 6.86 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP. He has now pitched in 272 games (1 start) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 18-12 with 13 saves, a 4.70 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Bruney will have a decent shot of making the bullpen this spring.

35-year old righty swinging 1B Paul Konerko finished 13th in the voting for the A.L. MVP Award in 2011. Konerko played in 149 games for the Pale Hose in 2011 and he was 163 of 543 (.300 avg, .906 OPS) with 69 runs scored, 31 homers, 105 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 1,998 games in his first 15 years in the majors and he is 2,024 of 7,185 (.282 avg, .858 OPS) with 1,040 runs scored, 396 homers, 1,261 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Konerko would have finished a little higher in the voting if he had some help in the lineup.

The Chicago White Sox won’t likely be big spenders in free agency

The Chicago White Sox won’t be spending a lot in free agency, but they could add these three guys who would add to the team in smaller roles in 2012:

1. Wilson Betemit - The White Sox could use a player like Betemit to share time at 3B with Brent Morel, as he isn’t quite ready for prime time quite yet.

2. Aaron Rowand - Aaron Rowand would come cheap and it never hurts to have a guy who plays as hard as he does. Plus, he could push Alex Rios in CF.

3. Micah Owings - The White Sox could use a long reliever to work multiple innings. Owings would be a good fit in that role in 2012.

The Chicago White Sox sign Jose Quintana

Blogged under General, Front Page, Bloglockers, Arrivals & Departures by chinmusic on Friday 11 November 2011 at 7:32 am

The White Sox have signed 22-year old lefty starter/reliever Jose Quintana to a minor league deal. He pitched in 30 games (12 starts) in A-ball for the Yankees last year and he was 10-2 with 1 save, a 2.91 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Quintana has now pitched in 82 games (41 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 18-8 with 2 saves, a 2.76 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He has whiffed 293 batters while only giving up 178 hits in his first 251 1/3 innings in the minors, showing what kind of stuff he has. But, he’s not without issues as he has walked 115 batters so far in the minors and that is way too many. I still like this pick-up for the Pale Hose.

The Chicago White Sox sign Donnie Veal

Blogged under General, Front Page, Bloglockers, Arrivals & Departures by chinmusic on Thursday 10 November 2011 at 3:41 pm

The White Sox have signed 27-year old lefty reliever Donnie Veal to a minor league deal. Veal pitched in 19 games (5 starts) in Rookie+A+AA+AAA-ball for the Pirates last year and he was 0-2 with a 4.22 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Veal’s only experience in the majors came back in 2009 with the Pirates. He pitched in 19 games (0 starts) for the Pirates in 2009 and he was 1-0 with a 7.16 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP. He had a rough time for the Pirates in 2009, but he was a Rule 5 Pick that they wanted to keep. Veal has a nice upside if the White Sox can get him to throw strikes.
